A 47-year-old man was arrested Sunday in connection with a hit-and-run in Otay Mesa that killed a former cheerleader two years ago.
San Diego police arrested Estevan Fabian Corona at the San Ysidro border Crossing after serving an arrest warrant there Sunday evening, Lt. Adam Sharki said Wednesday in a news release.
Investigators with the Police Department’s traffic division identified Corona as the suspect. The department did not release any further information about how he was identified.
Corona was arrested on suspicion of felony manslaughter and felony hit and run, officials said. He was booked into county jail Sunday.
The incident occurred March 5, 2020, around 9:14 a.m. in Otay Mesa, police said.
Brescia Ayón, 21, was crossing Otay Mesa Road in a marked crosswalk when a westbound sedan failed to stop at a red light at Otay Mesa Center, police said.
The silver Nissan kept going after the crash. It was last seen headed north on Heritage Road, police said.
Ayón died at the scene.
A GoFundMe account, set up two years ago to cover funeral expenses, described her as a former XoloGirls cheerleader for the Club Tijuana Xolos soccer team from 2017-2018. The webpage mentioned that she was studying child development at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, and she wanted to become a preschool teacher.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information can call the Police Department at (619) 531-2000 or the anonymous San Diego County Crime Stoppers tip line at (888) 580-8477.
