Police department apologizes for 'tone' of tweets about deadly storm

The police department in Kentucky has found itself in the spotlight after issuing an apology for a series of unconventional social media posts during Winter Storm Fern. Despite the apology, the department has continued its witty commentary, keeping a lighthearted tone in its communications.

The social media team of the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department (LMPD) has been actively engaging with the public through their X account, injecting humor into updates about storm-related events over the past few days.

On Sunday, the department was particularly active, providing a stream of humorous updates on their daily operations. One post humorously advised those whose cars were stuck in the snow to wait for an officer to “push, pull, lift, drag, or simply judge you.”

In another playful post, the LMPD remarked on the quality of the snow, likening it to a “free sample at Costco” and urging the public not to overreact, saying, “Calm down people. It ain’t that deep (literally).”

In another bizarre tweet, the LMPD declared: ‘We ain’t even got the GOOD GOOD snow. We got that “free sample at Costco” snow.

‘And we’re still out here losing our minds like it’s Snowmageddon 2035. Calm down people. It ain’t that deep (literally).’

In other posts, whoever was logged into the X account started going after different neighborhoods with their snarky remarks.

‘The snow has suppressed the smell in Butchertown and the residents are rejoicing,’ they said.

‘Germantown residents are shoveling their sidewalks with artisan reclaimed-wood shovels they swear they “found at a flea market.” At least they’re not drunk like last night…or maybe they are?’ another comical message reads.

They also shared snaps and videos of cops sledding and enjoying the snow, writing: ‘We get paid to do this. Haters are gonna hate.’

While the comments have been overwhelmingly positive – with viewers enjoying the lighthearted remarks – an apology was issued amid the rambling online behavior.

‘Good afternoon, The LMPD wishes to apologize for the tone of our tweets over the last 48 hours,’ the Monday post reads.

‘Our social feeds do not accurately reflect the entire department or this community.’

Prior to the seemingly apologetic plea, a stream of posts indicated that the officers behind the social media account were getting pressed by HR.

They wrote: ‘HR said we need ‘balance.’ So here is our balanced message (take it or leave it) Please drive safe.

‘Stop abandoning cars. Stop doing donuts in front of officers. Stop skiing behind pickup trucks, morons.’

In another post, they claimed that HR said they needed ‘balance’ in their uploads. They then created a poll asking followers if they preferred ‘balanced’ or ‘unhinged’ behavior.

Only 3 percent of voters opted for ‘balanced’ content.

‘BOO THOSE PEOPLE THAT SAY “BALANCED,”‘ the LMPD account reacted.

The posts have piqued the interest of multiple news organizations, none of which has gotten to the bottom of the online phenomenon.

In fact, the LMPD has shared the emails they have received from journalists online, turning the correspondence into yet another bit.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg was asked about the X account at a Monday press conference.

He broke into a wide smile and chuckled as the reporter in the crowd asked about the LMPD’s head-turning memos.

‘Let me say this,’ he began. ‘LMPD officers, our firefighters, our EMS officers, our snow fighters, they’ve all been working around the clock to help keep people safe.’

He continued: ‘That has been their focus and they should be commended for the tremendous job they are doing.

‘Some folks are trying to have fun online, on the account, during a time when a lot of people are at home, on social media.

‘They take their jobs incredibly seriously. So nobody should be confused by the clearly, obviously humorous tone of some comments they’ve been making online with the serious nature of their work.’

Despite the apology, the cops behind the account were back in full swing within a few hours.

Posting a photo of a jug of beer, they wrote: ‘How does Officer Cantdriveforcrap unwind after getting absolutely destroyed online for getting his cruiser stuck?’

Along with pictures of cars stalled in the snow, the cop behind the screen said: ‘Uhhhhhh here we go again.’

‘I am in rural Kentucky, your tweets kept me laughing throughout this mess. Shame on HR for their lack of a sense of humor,’ one man reacted.

‘Hopefully the social media manager gets a raise! I highly encourage you all to check out their feed for a good laugh,’ another chimed in.

‘If you aren’t following LMPD you are missing out. The person running their account is hilarious!’ someone added.

Negative reactions were few and far between, with one woman asserting: ‘The LMPD tweets are cringe and embarrassingly unfunny. Not against the concept – but be good at it.’

The Louisville metro area has been grappling with roughly five to eight inches of snow from Winter Storm Fern.

Hitting 34 states across the US, the inclement weather has claimed at least 28 lives.

Kentucky officials are investigating three deaths that may be tied to Fern, according to Governor Andy Beshear.

The Daily Mail has reached out to LMPD for comment.
