New poll finds Mamdani outstrips Cuomo 2:1 among NYC Latinos in mayoral race

Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani is leading the field by a healthy margin among Latinos in New York, a new poll set for release Tuesday found.

The poll, commissioned by the Hispanic Federation and conducted by Lake Research, showed Mamdani leading by double digits, receiving 48% of the vote to Andrew Cuomo’s 24% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa’s 13%. Another 13% were undecided.

While Mamdani’s candidacy has found popularity especially among younger, white voters, the results point to Mamdani making inroads among Latino New Yorkers as well. Mamdani performed well in the primary election in Hispanic neighborhoods like Washington Heights and East Harlem, while Cuomo won Latino districts in the Bronx.

Cuomo, now running on an independent ticket, is seeking to broaden his base, doing targeted outreach in predominantly Black, outer borough neighborhoods and toward older voters.

Tuesday’s poll also showed a generational gap. The 33-year-old Mamdani performed better among younger voters than older ones, with a 62% favorability rating among voters under 50 and 49% favorability among voters over 50, per the poll.

Mamdani has used social media and viral videos to build momentum throughout the campaign, which has appealed to the more-online younger generation. Older New Yorkers express more hesitance about his candidacy.

The margins of the poll are consistent with others that also show the democratic socialist with a significant lead.

The poll surveyed 600 voters and has a margin of error of +/- 4%. It was conducted between Sept. 25 and Oct. 4.

The respondents listed cost of living, crime and housing costs as their top three issues, and 21% responded in Spanish.

Mamdani, Cuomo and Sliwa are slated to face off in the Nov. 4 general election. Mayor Adams dropped out of the race last week amid low polling numbers and pressure to withdraw to help clear the field against Mamdani.
