Fans have been left scratching their heads over why Brentford weren’t handed a penalty in the second half against Liverpool.

The Bees were outshone on Saturday afternoon as their relegation fears continued, losing 4-1 despite Liverpool suffering a number of injuries in the game.

Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez were all withdrawn with knocks before the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium, but Jurgen Klopp’s side were in top form as their at least temporarily extended their lead at the top of the league.

In the second half, Ivan Toney appeared to receive a shove in the back from Andy Robertson in the penalty area, though referee Michael Oliver waved play on and, after a VAR check, the decision stood.

‘That is utterly unbelievable,’ one confused fan said on X, formerly Twitter. ‘And yet…it’s Liverpool, so…completely believable…

‘Yep,’ added a second. ‘Unreal how that’s not given. Not that it would of [sic] changed the result but absolutely shambolic refereeing.’

Some fans, however, pointed to another decision later in the match that seemed to see Luis Diaz tripped by Nathan Collins.

‘They didn’t give this either. Relax,’ on e fans said, highlighting the challenge that was checked by VAR but again waved away.

The result put Liverpool five points clear at the top of the league but Arsenal and Manchester City were still yet to play, with the Gunners racing into an early lead against Burnley.

The Reds were two points clear going into Saturday, but had played an extra game over defending champions City.
