A Queensland family has expressed their devastation after their 98-year-old grandmother was left waiting seven hours for an ambulance.

Shirley Prestipino fell to the floor of her family’s Brisbane home last week, breaking her hip in two places.

Her family was unable to move her as she lay on the tiles in agony.

“Her leg was twisted, it was all underneath her, and her head was smashed up against the wall,” Ms Prestipino’s daughter Tina Barber said.

“She was cramping and her leg was all swelling up.

“She knew, I think, she had a broken hip.”

Ms Barber said she phoned for an ambulance, who told her not to move her mother due to her injuries.

After seven hours, an ambulance arrived to help.

Once at the hospital, her operation was delayed because the hospital was at capacity.

“We still don’t know what is going to happen with mum,” Ms Barber said.

“She’s still not good.”

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said Ms Prestipino’s accident happened during the ambulance service’s fourth busiest day on record, with the high number of emergency calls the reason for delays.

“It is concerning that that occurred, but it is a very, very unusual circumstance in that 24 hours,” Ms D’Ath said.

Ramping in Queensland hospitals has been an issue for some time, with health experts blaming a lack of staffing resources and hospital beds for the delays.

Ros Bates, the opposition’s health spokesperson, called for ambulance wait times to be made public, and for QAS staff to let patients know of delays in real time.

“At the moment you can look across into NSW into Tweed Heads and see just how many ambulances are on the ramp,” Ms Bates said.

“That’s important, we don’t have that here in Queensland.”
