A killer and rapist, who has been caught repeatedly breaching his parole, claims he deserves another shot at freedom, just three months after he was again caught using drugs.

Jonathan Bakewell, now 60, murdered Ann Marie Culleton in her Darwin unit in 1988.

He was in a haze of drugs when he attacked the 20-year-old and each time he has been given a chance at release, he has been caught using those same drugs again.

“It is just a matter of time before he attacks again, so we are living in perpetual fear,” Ms Culleton’s sister, Eileen said.

“This man, Jonathan Bakewell, is as dangerous today as the day he raped and murdered my sister Ann Marie Cullerton – and I will fight to keep him behind bars.”

Bakewell now lives in South Australia after a prison transfer to Adelaide part way through his sentence.

His parole was finally cancelled altogether in October last year, but he has lodged a bid in the Supreme Court to have it re-instated.

That case returns to court next month.

Meanwhile, Ms Culleton is fighting for a change in the law, to prevent killers whose crimes involve sexual assault, from being eligible for parole at all.

“There is no other way we can guarantee community safety,” she said.

“The judiciary is putting the rights of a rapist-murderer ahead of the right of women in South Australia to be safe.”
