Exclusive: Katelyn Hughes, 29, and her husband Joel always wanted to be parents but didn’t anticipate it would cost them $50,000 and counting.
They’re among the one in six Australian couples affected by infertility, many of whom are going into debt to start a family or can’t afford to try in the cost-of-living crisis.

The cost of undergoing a standard In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycle in Australia typically falls between $11,500 and $17,000, as reported by Minerva Fertility.

Jenna Adams, a resident of South Australia, shared that the expense of IVF had a devastating impact on her family’s finances.

During the 2010s, she and her partner invested over $50,000 into several IVF cycles.

In order to cover these costs, they resorted to tapping into their superannuation and selling Adams’ car. Their efforts resulted in the joy of having two daughters, now four and two years old.

Despite the happiness motherhood has brought her, Adams described the financial toll as overwhelming.

“We still haven’t been able to recover financially,” she revealed in an interview with nine.com.au.

“It left us with nothing left in savings and we’ve had to make voluntary contributions to our super to try and build it back up.”

Going through multiple rounds of IVF also took a significant and lasting toll on her physical and mental health.

Adams would have loved to have more children but with the cost of living and the price of IVF, it just wasn’t possible.
