The 14-time Grammy-winning bandleader will take the Severance stage on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

CLEVELAND — Legendary jazz composer and performer Herbie Hancock will visit Severance Music Center to perform a concert this fall, The Cleveland Orchestra announced Wednesday.

According to the orchestra, which owns and operates the concert hall, the Grammy-winning bandleader will take the Severance stage on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Presale tickets are available starting on Thursday at 10 a.m. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday at 10 a.m.

Hancock, 84, is a sonic pioneer with no shortage of contributions to the jazz form over his seven-decade career, most notably as an architect of the genre-bending, funk-inspired jazz fusion soundscapes of the 1960s and 70s. A child prodigy who was soloing on Mozart with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by age 11, Hancock was recruited to join Miles Davis’s “Second Great Quintet” in 1963 while also finding time to write and record decades worth of jazz standards under his own name.

Hancock’s most famous compositions include “Watermelon Man,” (his recorded debut as a bandleader, released a year before joining forces with Davis) “Cantaloupe Island,” “Maiden Voyage” and “Chameleon.”

The 1980s saw more experimentation from Hancock that earned mainstream acclaim. Fusing jazz with hip-hop, “Rockit,” released in 1983 as part of his 29th studio album, became a hit on MTV and won Hancock his first of 14 Grammy Awards. The multi-hyphenate has also written the scores for films like “Harlem Nights,” “Death Wish,” and “Action Jackson.” His score for “Round Midnight” won an Academy Award in 1986.

Patrons can buy tickets for the concert by calling the Severance Music Center Ticket Office at 216-231-1111 or visiting The Cleveland Orchestra’s website.
