Robin Wright has reflected on the difficulties of parenting with her now ex husband Sean Penn.

The actress, 59, and Sean ended their marriage in 2007, briefly tried getting back together, but ultimately divorced in 2010. They have two children, Dylan Frances Penn, 34, and Hopper Jack Penn, 32.

In a recent interview, Robin shared the difficulties she faced co-parenting with the 65-year-old star, as he was often away for work and played a stricter role in their children’s lives.

She told The Sunday Times: ‘He was gone so much of the time. He’d come back and be the policeman and then he’d leave me with the residue.

‘Then I would soften the blow. We were both extremes. They didn’t get that grey area in the middle, which is stern, and that is what they needed.’

Throughout the years, Hopper has openly discussed the personal challenges he has encountered, including his battle with crystal meth addiction, and how his father played a role in helping him overcome it.

In a conversation with ES Magazine, Hopper recounted: “I was involved with a lot of things, but meth was what really took me down. I ended up in rehab after waking up in a hospital, and my dad gave me a choice: ‘Rehab? Or living on a bench?’ I decided on rehab.”

‘Thank God I got out of that because that was the worst time in my life. Because it’s not fun when it gets to a point where you just need it.’

Dylan has worked as a model and an actress following in her parents’ footsteps.

The couple met on the set of State of Grace in 1990 and had an on-off relationship before marrying in 1996.

When their relationship attracted media attention, they relocated to a small town near San Francisco. During this time, Robin put her acting career on hold to concentrate on raising their children.

As much as she still believes this was the right decision, she said she would have done some things differently in how she raised her children.

She expressed to the magazine: “I have tremendous regret as a mother for not being stricter, and I’ve witnessed the consequences of that regret with my kids for many years.”

The exes started dating in 1989, and were wed from 1996 to 2010.

Sean and Robin have a history of splitting up and getting back together.

They wed in 1996 then planned on divorcing in December 2007 but called it off four months later.

They separated again in April 2009, but withdrew the documents the following month; however, Robin filed the divorce documents in August 2009 and their divorce was finalized in July 2010.

Robin and Sean began a relationship in 1989 following his divorce from Madonna.

Sean was married to Australian actress Leila George, 31, from 2020 to 2022.

The Santa Monica, California, native made his film debut in the 1981 film Taps that also starred George C. Scott, Timothy Hutton, Ronny Cox and Tom Cruise.

Sean has won Oscars for his roles in the 2003 mystery drama Mystic River and the 2008 biopic Milk.
