Following a day filled with toxic abuse and so much hostility that organizers required police assistance to manage the situation, Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica stood together firmly after an unforgettable day at the Ryder Cup.
Throughout the day, McIlroy endured taunts involving Erica, his former fiancée the tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, and other personal matters from the crowd as he successfully navigated the Bethpage course with Shane Lowry, a close personal friend and fellow golfer.
The duo shared a hug after defeating Justin Thomas and Cameron Young, marking a day when Europe was on the verge of triumph. Shortly afterward, McIlroy reunited with Erica, and they left the 18th green hand in hand.
McIlroy maintained his composure when questioned about whether the American fans crossed the line by targeting Erica, but he confessed to feeling ‘drained’ after completing the day’s play.
‘Playing an away Ryder Cup is extremely, extremely challenging,’ McIlroy remarked. ‘People can decide for themselves if things went too far. I am proud of us for managing to win despite the obstacles we faced.
He continued: ‘I don´t mind them having a go at us. ‘Like, that’s to be expected. I mean, that’s what an away Ryder Cup is.

‘Whenever they are still doing it while you are over the ball and trying to hit your shot, that’s the tough thing.’
Erica followed her husband alongside Wendy Lowry, Shane’s wife, and Diane Donald, wife of Europe captain Luke on a day of high drama.
McIlroy appeared to feed off the drama, holding his own throughout the situation. He expressed gratitude to his playing partner Lowry for helping him maintain his cool against Thomas and Young, who also seemed displeased with some of the fan outbursts directed at them.
‘I am drained to say the least, he (Lowry) dug in big time when I had to. Credit goes to this guy. He was there for me all day.’
Lowry added: ‘It was intense, something I’ve enver experienced but this is what I live for.
‘This is what I get up in the morning for. I really want us to win this tournament. We still have a job to do, keep our foot on the gas. But very happy now, enjoying this.’
When McIlroy was lining up a putt on No. 6, the rowdiness got so intense that he stepped away and, with boos raining down, told the rules official he wouldn´t putt ‘until they shut up.’ They did. Then, he did. And drained an 11-foot putt to halve the hole after Young had hit his approach to 2 feet.
McIlroy also gave out a yell as he glared at the grandstand and pumped his fists after sinking a 9-foot putt on No. 14 that gave him and Lowry a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. ‘Let’s f***ing go,’ he roared.

Many American fans at Bethpage taunted McIlroy over his rocky 2024 with wife Erica

McIlroy himself was fired up by the taunts, it seemed, and won his afternoon matchup
Rory and Erica, who married in 2017 and have a child together in daughter Poppy Kennedy, five, are firmly back on track following a rocky 2024 which at one stage saw the golf star hand his wife divorce papers.
The couple looked to be heading for a split before they later announced it was no longer going ahead in a dramatic U-turn, with McIlroy saying earlier this year that the ordeal was a ‘wake-up call’.
At the time, rumors suggested he was involved in a relationship with CBS Sports’ Amanda Balionis – an allegation which has neither been directly addressed or confirmed by either party.
‘There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate,’ McIlroy said at the time. ‘Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game.
‘Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.’
