DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur Fire Department is investigating after a fire broke out at an unoccupied home Saturday night.

Fire crews responded to a home on W. Green Street in Decatur around 9:45 p.m. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the home. The crews entered, began to extinguish the fire, searched for anyone who might be inside, and provided ventilation to the home.

“The speed and coordination between the companies helped to mitigate the incident quickly,” the Decatur Fire Department said in a news release about the fire.

Despite the rapid response, the home suffered “major damage” as the fire had spread into the attic space. Currently, the Decatur Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit is analyzing the incident to determine the fire’s origin. The residence was vacant and undergoing renovations at the time.
