A British railway employee who suffered severe injuries during a mass stabbing incident on a train is being celebrated as a hero for his actions that potentially saved numerous lives.

Last Saturday, 48-year-old Samir Zitouni took decisive action to protect passengers amid the terrifying knife attack on a train heading to London.

According to the British Transport Police, Zitouni, who serves as a customer host, is currently “critically unwell” but stable in the hospital. Meanwhile, three other individuals also remain in stable condition.

In a statement, his family expressed their pride in Sam’s bravery, saying, “We are incredibly proud of Sam and his courageous actions.”

“The outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, as well as the numerous well wishes for his recovery, have deeply moved us,” they shared.

“The police referred to him as a hero on Saturday night, but to us, he has always been one.”

Zitouni has worked for London North Eastern Rail (LNER) for more than 20 years.

It’s believed he was one of the first people aboard the train to confront the attacker and shielded a girl, leaving him wounded.

David Horne, LNER managing director, praised his actions.

“In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him.

“His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him, and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening.”

UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told the BBC the courage shown by Zitouni was “utterly remarkable” after putting himself “in harm’s way”.

Anthony Williams, 32, was charged with 10 counts of attempted murder over the train stabbing and a count of attempted murder in connection with an attack in London last Saturday.
