The sudden passing of Ian Leavers, the former leader of the Queensland Police Union, has prompted an ongoing investigation. Leavers, who was 57, was discovered deceased at his residence in Mount Ommaney, a suburb in Brisbane’s southwest, around 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday.

Authorities currently regard his death as non-suspicious, although inquiries continue to unfold. Leavers was a deeply respected figure within the Queensland Police community, having carved a notable career path since joining the force in 1989.

Throughout his distinguished tenure, he worked across various significant divisions, including the criminal investigation branch and the child investigation unit, showcasing his dedication to law enforcement.

In 2009, Leavers took on the pivotal roles of general president and CEO of the Queensland Police Union, positions he held for 15 years. His leadership extended further as he assumed responsibilities with the Police Federation of Australia beginning in 2021.

‘Ian earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the Police Service he loved.

‘Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some our state’s most tragic and defining events.’

‘On behalf of all Queenslanders, we extend heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family and friends during this difficult time,’ he said.

The Police Federation of Australia remembered Mr Leavers as a ‘long-serving and respected leader within the policing community for more than three decades’.
