As a lifelong member of Mt. Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Woodlawn, Jenkins was known for her warm and welcoming nature. Her sudden and violent death has left the church community reeling in grief and disbelief.
According to Chicago police, Jenkins was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds early Sunday morning, around 4:30 a.m., in an alley near her residence at 64th and Drexel. She was reportedly en route to the church’s 5 a.m. service, a commitment she rarely missed.
The news of Jenkins’ tragic passing gradually made its way through the neighborhood, impacting many, including Michael Adams, a recent resident living just a few doors away. Although Adams did not know her personally, he recalls her as a friendly and familiar face.
“It’s a heartbreaking situation,” Adams shared. “She seemed like such a nice lady. She always greeted us warmly whenever we crossed paths, whether she was heading to work or elsewhere.”
Adams says his block was quiet in the morning when he left for church, but when he returned home in the afternoon, there was a heavy police presence. At this point, police do not have a suspect or a motive in this case.
“It was just chaos. They had everything wrapped up in tape everywhere, front and back,” Adams said.
Jenkins’ five children range from a freshman in college to 10 years old. The eldest child told ABC7 that the family is trying to be there for each other and process what happened.
Area One detectives are investigating.
Police did not immediately provide further information.
