Shoppers have been evacuated from outlets on Oxford Street following reports of a gas leak sparking an emergency shut down of the area. 

Police officers and the London Fire Brigade were called to near Poland Street in Soho, Westminster at 13.05pm to reports of a gas leak.

Around 400 people from nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution and the area was cordoned off by police.  

Authorities also shut down Berwick Street, Oxford Street, Noel Street, Wardour Street and Great Marlborough Street, but they have since been reopened.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed there have been no injuries and the area is now safe, according to Westminster councillor Timothy Barnes. 

He tweeted: ‘Thanks to Soho and Westminster police, alongside Westminster council for managing Poland Street, Soho this afternoon following a gas leak. 

‘Site now safe. Small evacuation area nearby with Cadent gas offering hot water and a warm place for anyone cut off. DM me for details if requested.’

‘Following our tweet earlier regarding the gas leak is Poland Street, Please note than Berwick St, Oxford Street and Noel Street are now open. Poland Street remains closed whilst engineers work on the Gas Leak. Officers remain on scene.’  

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Police are assisting following a gas leak. Officers were called at 13:05hrs on Monday, 4 April in the Poland Street area, in Westminster to a report of a gas leak.

‘Officers, London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade have attended the scene. We are not aware of reports of any injuries.

‘Local road closures are in place and some buildings have been evacuated while emergency services deal.’
