He has spent the vast majority of his time across the pond since recovering from a bike accident in Malibu. 

And it appeared that trademarks of Simon Cowell‘s native London had escaped his memory during Britain’s Got Talent auditions when he failed to recognise the England flag.

The Got Talent tycoon, 62, was reportedly left humiliated by fellow judge and comedian David Walliams when a five-year-old was showcasing his knowledge of national flags.

According to The Sun, the talented infant challenged the music mogul to a competition, showing him the Saint George’s Cross.

Simon replied: ‘Oh, I know that, it’s Switzerland.’ 

In disbelief, David, 50, yelled: ‘You idiot. What country are we in now? England.’

While David was left dumbfounded, The London Palladium audience were said to be in stitches.  

The Cross of Saint George – England’s emblem for more than 800 years – is a red cross on white, whereas Switzerland’s flag is a white cross on red.

Father-of-one Simon, who recently got engaged to Lauren Silverman, came off his electric motorcycle in May 2020 while testing it in his home of Malibu, California.

Following back surgery and months of treatment for his spinal injury, the record executive recovered.

On Sunday, Ant McPartlin welcomed back a live audience for the first time in two years after Britain’s Got Talent was cancelled due to Covid.

The TV presenter, 46, who was joined by his co-host Declan Donnelly, joked that he wanted to cry as he kicked off the 2022 series of the ITV talent show.  

ITV bosses made the decision to cancel the programme last year due to the difficulties surrounding auditioning during to the pandemic. 

The year before the typically live semi-finals were delayed until the autumn and were mostly pre-recorded and involved a remote studio audience.
