CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – On Tuesday, the Brevard County School Board will engage in discussions surrounding a highly debated proposal to close down a long-standing elementary school.

The district is considering the closure of Cape View Elementary School located in Cape Canaveral due to a significant drop in student enrollment numbers.

Should the school be closed, its nearly 300 students would be relocated to Roosevelt Elementary School, which is situated approximately 7 miles away.

“It would be quite a distance to travel, and I believe it poses a major inconvenience for many families,” expressed one Cape View parent.

This proposal has sparked considerable opposition, with an online petition garnering over 2,200 signatures from those advocating to keep the school operational.

The plan is also facing resistance from some parents at Roosevelt, who are opposed to the potential influx of new students.

“(The move would) just overcrowd what we have here,” a parent said. “It’s nice the way it is. If it gets overpopulated, it may not be as nice.”

The school board is scheduled to take up the plan at a 1 p.m. workshop and then again at a 5:30 p.m. school board meeting.
