A young man has died in a freak beach accident on New Year’s Eve.

The 28-year-old died as he was being airlifted to hospital when a cliff collapsed sending rocks and debris falling onto a group of people sitting under it at Southside Beach.

Part of the cliff collapsed about 2.15pm near Southside Beach, a nude beach not far from Bells Beach, 100km south west of Melbourne, on Friday.

Three of the group were struck by falling rocks and debris that landed on them from 30 metres above.

The incident happened close to the Jarosite Mine Track at Southside Beach.

The 28-year-old man suffered serious upper body injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

He was then evacuated by helicopter to Alfred Hospital.

A man and a woman suffered non-life threatening injuries and were seen wearing slings.

All three injured beachgoers are in their 20s. 

Approximately a dozen distressed onlookers watched the scene as the man was treated.

Police said six people were sitting under the cliff when it collapsed, with debris falling on three people.

Ambulance Victoria paramedics rushed to the scene to assist the injured after being called at 2.20pm on Friday. 

No-one else was hurt.
