Gardner’s professional career began when the Washington Redskins selected him with the 15th overall choice in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week following a 208-yard, one-touchdown performance against the Carolina Panthers during his first season. His experience as a quarterback led the Redskins to use him on trick plays during games; he was 2-for-3 for 46 yards and two passing scores during the 2003 NFL season (to Chad Morton and Trung Candidate).

He was traded to the Carolina Panthers in the 2005 offseason for a sixth-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft after four seasons in Washington. He spent the majority of the season behind Steve Smith, Keary Colbert, and Ricky Proehl on the Panthers’ depth chart. On December 16, 2005, the Panthers waived Gardner, and on December 19, 2005, the Green Bay Packers signed him. On March 21, 2006, he re-signed with Green Bay. Gardner was released by the Packers on September 2, 2006. He signed a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in September 2006. He only has two receptions for 17 yards with the Chiefs in 2006. Before the 2007 season, he left.
