A pregnant mom-of-five was killed after being run over and shot 20 times, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend.
Arel Dawkins was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action after the death of 42-year-old Braisen Cain.
Just before 8 a.m. on Aug. 6, Kansas City police were sent to the scene.
Police found Braisen, a teacher, lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
She was then pronounced dead.
Dawkins, of Blue Springs, Missouri, knew the victim, according to court documents.
A neighbor told detectives Braisen had recently broken up with him, as reported by NeedToKnow.
She said she heard gunshots while inside of her home, and had saw Dawkins reloading his gun.
She added that the victim was pregnant with his child at the time.
Braisen was the mother to five boys, according to PEOPLE.
The neighbor identified Dawkins in a photographic lineup as the man who shot Braisen.
Others told police that Dawkins confessed to running her over in his car before shooting her multiple times.
Video allegedly showed Dawkins running over Braisen before shooting her several times at close range.
He continued shooting after walking away.
He inserted a new magazine into his gun to keep shooting before finally driving off.
He then fled the scene in his car.
PEOPLE reported that Dawkins allegedly confessed to killing Braisen on the phone with family members.
He was located in Springfield, Missouri, where he was taken into custody after threatening suicide.
A GoFundMe was made for Braisen’s family to “provide on-going support for the five children she leaves behind.”
“Braisen was an immensely loving, kind, and caring person who touched the hearts of many. She was cherished not only by her students but also by their families and everyone within the school community,” the fundraiser mentioned.
“She consistently saw the potential in each of her students and encouraged them to achieve their best. A remarkable mother, she prioritized her sons above all else and will be profoundly missed by her family, her colleagues, and everyone who had the good fortune of knowing her.”
Dawkins is being held without bond.
