A stolen vehicle report led to a high-stakes chase and eventual shooting on Saturday evening, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A young individual is in critical condition following a police-involved shooting that ensued after a car chase, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting took place in the Moncrief area, though the sequence of events began much earlier and several miles away, as detailed by JSO’s Chief Alan Parker.

Chief Parker explained that the situation originated when an officer responded to a stolen car alert from Brentwood shortly after 6 p.m. The vehicle was later spotted traveling on Moncrief Road near 8th Street, with its status as stolen confirmed by its license tags.

The officer on the scene waited for backup before engaging the vehicle, Chief Parker noted. As soon as a second officer arrived, the driver of the suspected stolen car attempted to flee, sparking a brief pursuit that continued onto the westbound lanes of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

The chase reached a critical point when the vehicle turned onto Myrtle Avenue, colliding with a third officer’s patrol car before crashing into a storefront wall at the intersection’s corner in the 3100 block, according to Chief Parker. At that moment, several individuals exited the vehicle and fled.

Two people from the car stayed at the scene and were detained, but four or five people reportedly ran, including the person who was shot.

Chief Parker said it appeared to be a teenage boy, who was being pursued by officer Jacob Cahill.

During the chase, Parker said Cahill was yelling at the suspect to get his hands away from or to stop reaching in his pants, warning that he would shoot. Cahill ended up shooting at the suspect multiple times before detaining him.

Medical treatment was provided, and the boy was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Chief Parker reported that no gun was located on the suspect, but evidence was still being collected,

This was Officer Cahill’s 2nd officer-involved shooting in his 3.5 year career with JSO, Chief Parker said, and the 15th one this year for the agency.

A person was also found shot on Brentwood Avenue around the time the car was reported stolen, and he later died. When asked about a possible connection, Chief Parker said it’s all being addressed in the investigation.
