A former women’s swimmer from Roanoke College is criticizing Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate for Virginia governor, over her remarks on excluding males from female sports.
Spanberger recently faced off against her rival, Virginia’s Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, where she was questioned about potentially reversing Gov. Glen Youngkin’s directive to safeguard women’s sports, as Fox News reported on Sunday.
The Democrat replied, “Decisions in each local community should be made by parents, educators, and teachers. It’s not something that should be dictated by politicians.”
Earle-Sears opposes biological males identifying as “transgender” participating in girls’ sports. When questioned if her stance discriminates against “transgender girls,” Earle-Sears responded, “I will not overturn the governor’s executive order. We understand girls desire privacy. It’s straightforward. My opponent evades the question because she voted for men appearing nude in girls’ locker rooms, bathrooms, and sports.”
Former Roanoke women’s swim captain Lily Mullens gave Fox a scathing response to Spanberger’s comments.
“The cowardice and lack of a straightforward yes or no regarding Governor Youngkin’s policy to protect Virginia’s girls undermine trust in Spanberger’s judgment and integrity. I strongly believe that if you cannot condemn such blatant disregard for the rights of Virginia’s girls, you are not fit for any office, particularly that of Governor,” she expressed, accusing Spanberger of catering to “radical gender ideology.”
She further stated, “Winsome Sears, a true leader, has clearly stated her commitment to safeguarding women and girls with a quality Spanberger and her party lack: common sense. I can testify from personal experience about the feeling of having one’s rights as a woman overlooked by those in authority.”
The Fox article noted that Mullins is suing a college in her state over an incident that happened with a so-called “transgender swimmer.”
In a social media post Sunday, Earle-Sears criticized Spanberger for giving a non-answer when asked about men in girls’ private spaces.
“YIKES: Abigail Spanberger gives a 2-minute word salad defending her support for men in girls’ bathrooms and predators in their locker rooms,” she wrote:
In a post on Friday, Earle-Sears again highlighted Spanberger’s position.
“This ‘woman’ — child predator Richard ‘Riki’ Cox — repeatedly used a girls’ locker room and exposed himself to young girls. Abigail Spanberger thinks he has the right to be there,” she said:
Meanwhile, Spanberger has refused to withdraw her endorsement of Democrat attorney general candidate Jay Jones after text messages showed him apparently fantasizing about a Republican lawmaker being killed, – News reported Thursday.
