Mr Gutwein, 57, said he has, “nothing left in the tank to give,” after the past two years.
The member for Bass said a recount will need to be done in his electorate, and he’ll remain premier until a new leader is elected by the Liberal Party later this year.
“The past two years have delivered unforeseen challenges as we’ve navigated through COVID-19, and focus on rebuilding a stronger Tasmania,” he said at a press conference on Monday afternoon.
“During this time, I rightly focused on everyone else’s family, are I want to spend some time focusing on my own.
“What I’ve found after the last two years especially is I have nothing left in the tank to give.”
He boasted Tasmania had had “the best” COVID-19 response in the country, and also thanked his family including wife Mandy, son Finn and daughter Millie.
