Ukrainian refugees arriving at the US-Mexico border in San Ysidro, Calif., were welcomed by the warm embrace of their loved ones after fleeing the horror of war unfolding in their homeland.
Ukrainians have been arriving at Mexico’s northern border cities by the thousands in hopes of being granted temporary admission to the US on humanitarian grounds.
Holding their children’s hands in one and whatever is left of their belongings in the other, parents are presenting themselves to border agents to seek asylum.
Thousands of Ukrainians have already been let in, a promise the Biden administration has kept after announcing last month that it would welcome 100,000 refugees displaced by the war.
The promise to accept migrants does not extend to Russians, Mexicans, and other South and Central American migrants who also remain encamped in Mexico.
Emotional images show tearful Ukrainians embracing their loved ones waiting for them at the border.
Women can be seen smiling for the first time since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a large-scale invasion on Feb. 24 using land, air, and naval forces.

The invasion has drawn condemnation around the world and increasingly severe economic sanctions against Russia.

The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests by The Post for information on the number of Ukrainian refugees.

The Wall Street Journal reported last month that more than 10,000 Ukrainians had visited Mexico as tourists in the first two months of this year, and officials believe most of that number will eventually head to the US.
