A teenage girl was shot and killed during a drive by shooting as she brushed her friend’s hair during a sleepover in Missouri.
Sixteen-year-old Traelynn Sibley was just days away from commencing her junior year at high school when she was shot at a Kansas City residence on August 9, as reported by KSHB.
According to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, the girls were ‘styling each other’s hair at a vanity near the front entrance’ when the shooter drove by and hit Sibley in the throat.
Bailey Lewis, 21, was charged with second-degree murder, accessory armed criminal action and accessory unlawful use of a weapon for the crime.
Officials stated that Sibley was staying over at the house when Lewis drove by to strike at someone else inside the house after having a ‘fallout’ with them, stemming from an incident where she supposedly allowed them to get ‘ambushed’ at a gas station.
‘[Those inside the residence] described an ordinary evening with two females styling each other’s hair at a vanity near the main entrance, one female in a back bedroom, and two adult males engaging in video games in the living room. A toddler was also present in the home,’ stated the court documentation.
‘They heard gunfire and saw projectiles entering the home through the front door and the area around the living room’s wall/window near the entrance.
‘The juvenile female, hit by the gunfire, was doing her friend’s hair at the vanity when she was struck in the throat. She ran to the bathroom and collapsed.’

Lewis was identified by surveillance video that showed her 2025 Hyundai Elantra coming and going from the scene, police said.
Once investigators identified Lewis, they learned that she had a falling out with others who lived in the house.
One person said they had ‘not associated for a couple months’ with Lewis after she accused them of theft, the court document stated.
Another person inside the home told police they knew Lewis, but ‘had a falling out with [Lewis] over [Lewis] letting her get “jumped” at a gas station months before.’
Investigators also linked Lewis to another shooting that took place approximately 15 minutes before and spotted her car on video near that scene, police said.
‘It should be noted the drive time via Google Maps is between 11-18 minutes from location to location depending on the route you take,’ the court document said.
‘This drive time aligned with the approximate time frame between the incidents if a car fired shots into [the apartment complex] and then drove straight to [the former friend’s home].’
Lewis was arrested on August 28 and is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center on $400,000 bond.

Sibly’s mom told KCTV5 that her daughter was a ‘beautiful, bright, sunny girl.’
‘She was a free spirit and almost always smiling and happy. She loved to dance, draw, and do nails, and wanted to be a beautician someday,’ the mother said.
‘We are absolutely broken by the loss of our sweet girl. I want to bring awareness to how these tragedies affect the community.’
