Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 named ‘most American-made cars’ in new survey – but Elon Musk has yet to be invited to EV events by the White House

  • Cars.com named Tesla Model Y ‘the most American-made car’ in a new survey
  • The survey also showed the Tesla Model 3 in second place
  • However, President Biden has repeatedly snubbed Elon Musk when it comes to inviting him to the EV summit
  • Biden also congratulated GM for starting the EV revolution
  • GM shipped 26 EVs in the same quarter as Tesla shipped 300,000

Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 vehicles have been named ‘the most American-made cars’ in a new survey and yet, President Joe Biden has excluded Elon Musk’s company from the EV summit and named GM as the leader of electric vehicles.

‘They have so much power in the White House that they can exclude Tesla from an EV summit, Musk said speaking with Tesla Owners Silicon Valley.

And adding insult to injury, President Biden also congratulated Mary Barra, CEO of GM, at a separate event for leading the electric vehicle revolution.

‘I believe it was in the same quarter that GM delivered 26 electric vehicles and Tesla delivered 300,000,’ Musk continued in the interview.

The survey was conducted by Cars.com’s annual American Made Index, which awarded the Tesla Model Y compact SUV as the number one American-made car, with the Model 3 compact sedan coming in second.

The index is based on a specific set of data including where the cars are assembled, parts sourcing through the American Automobile Labeling Act and factory employment.

Jenni Newman, Cars.com editor-in-chief, said in a statement: ‘The composition of this year’s much-anticipated American-Made Index is particularly interesting in the context of our current marketplace, where high gas prices and scarce inventory meet peak consumer interest in electric vehicles and a heightened demand for American-made products.

‘That Tesla — an American-made all-electric make — appears frequently and high up on the list may indicate a coming alignment of market forces that could really explode once we break through microchip supply chain issues, especially if gas prices remain historically high. It also bodes well for other OEMs, including Honda, Ford and GM, working to diversify product lines with more EV and hybrid options.’

The EV Summit, which took place from September 1 to 2, saw several big names in the business, GM, Ford and Stellantis, all except Tesla.

The then White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked during a press briefing in August whether Tesla was being excluded from the event because its employees were not part of an automotive union.

‘I’ll let you draw your own conclusion,’ Psaki said.

However, she did say the three companies that were invited to the summit were ‘the three largest employers of the United Auto Workers.’ Tesla’s auto workers are not unionized.

Then Musk was not invited to the presidents Build Back Better meeting in January of this year, which resulted the billionaire sharing his feelings on Twitter – he called Biden ‘a damp sock puppet in human form.’

And this was also the event where GM was praised for starting the EV revolution.

It wasn’t until a month later, in February, did Biden finally mention Tesla when talking about his effort to get more electric vehicles on the road.

‘Since 2021, companies have announced investments totaling more than $200 billion in domestic manufacturing here in America, from iconic companies like GM and Ford building out new electric vehicle production; to Tesla, our nation’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer,’ Biden said at a White House event on lowering energy costs.

Musk has yet to be invited to a meeting with other corporate leaders in the electric vehicle industry and Biden allegedly has no plans to invite him any time soon, over half a dozen sources close to the matter told CNBC.
