Fans are calling for Gareth Southgate to call up Raheem Sterling for England once again after he scored a sumptuous free-kick in Chelsea’s 4-1 loss at Newcastle.

The winger fired past Nick Pope from the edge of the D to level and has been one of their outstanding players this season with six goals.

However, he has been excluded from the last five England squads and his chances of making the European Championships appear ever slimmer.

‘Raheem Sterling continues to make a mockery of Southgate’s England selections lol,’ wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter.

‘idc [I don’t care] about England like that but Southgate refusing to call up Sterling is just criminal,’ said another.

‘Sterling is an all-timer, England aren’t winning anything without him,’ wrote another.

‘Sterling took that no England call up very personal,’ said another.

The 28-year-old has been one of the brightest sparks in Chelsea’s season alongside Cole Palmer.

The Blues have had a distinctly average campaign going forward but Sterling already has nearly as many goals as last season.

He has fallen down the England pecking order while other players going through sticky patches domestically, such as Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips, have kept their places.

Sterling has not featured in an England squad since the Qatar World Cup, where he was an important member of the team and scored in the opening game against Iran.
