Australian children’s group The Wiggles are known for their catchy lyrics, lively dance moves and, of course, their iconic coloured skivvies.

But Blue Wiggle Anthony Field has revealed there’s actually a very practical reason why band members always wear long-sleeved tops on stage – to hide their body ink.

‘We’re covered in tattoos,’ explained Field, 58, while discussing The Wiggles’ uniform on 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed and Erin on Thursday.

Radio host Dave ‘Hughsey’ Hughes said: ‘I didn’t know you were covered in tattoos because of the skivvy! Did the tattoos come first, or did the skivvies come first?

Field, who founded The Wiggles in 1991, replied: ‘The tattoos came first. I was in the army way back. Everybody had them!’

‘I was in the army in the ’80s, everybody had [tattoos]. They were called “tough stickers” in those days, and only guys in the army and the services or in prison had them,’ he joked.

Field said his tattoos ‘would have been an issue’ when the group was first established because they ‘wouldn’t look good’ on a children’s entertainer.

However, he noted that society’s opinions on tattoos have ‘changed now’, and body art is far more prevalent in society these days.

Field has several arm tattoos, and often posts photos on social media of himself flaunting his inked biceps.

Ex-Yellow Wiggle Sam Moran boasts a colourful tattoo collection featuring ‘passport stamps’ from countries including America, the UK, Canada and Ireland.

He received each tattoo while visiting the corresponding country, either on tour or on holiday.

‘You know how people talk about how they start getting an itch and they want more and more? This was my idea to keep me from going crazy… but it’s also ended up being part of a bigger piece of art,’ he told the Newcastle Herald in 2014.
