NEW YORK – The Toronto International Film Festival has decided to show a documentary regarding the 2023 Hamas attack after initially withdrawing it, due to public outcry over its removal from the lineup.

Initially this week, TIFF announced it had pulled “The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue” from its festival roster. The festival cited concerns related to legal clearance issues for some footage in the documentary. Deadline first reported that the issue centered on confirming the identity and legal permissions for the use of live-streamed footage from the Hamas militants themselves during the attack.

On Thursday evening, the festival’s CEO, Cameron Bailey, alongside the documentary’s director, Barry Avrich, released a joint statement confirming the film’s inclusion at the festival.

“Both TIFF and the filmmakers have acknowledged the distress and disappointment communicated by the public and are committed to resolving this,” stated Bailey and Avrich. “We collaborated to find a solution that addresses significant safety, legal, and programming issues.”

They further mentioned, “The communication from TIFF surrounding its requirements was not clear about the complexities and challenges that appeared, and we apologize for that.”

The documentary highlights the narrative of retired Israeli General Noam Tibon and his efforts to rescue his family and others during the attack on October 7, 2023, as featured in a “60 Minutes” segment.

After being informed that the film wouldn’t screen at the festival, the “Road Between Us” filmmakers issued a statement claiming TIFF “censored its own programming by refusing the film.”

Bailey disputed that allegation, and pleaded that the situation demanded sensitivity.

“The events of October 7, 2023, and the ongoing suffering in Gaza weigh heavily on us, underscoring the urgent need for compassion amid rising antisemitism and Islamophobia,” Bailey said on Wednesday.

The Toronto International Film Festival, North America’s largest film festival, runs Sept. 4–14.
