Three lanes of northbound Interstate 5 in Carlsbad remained closed Wednesday after an early-morning fatal crash involving a suspected drunken driver, authorities said.
The crash was reported at La Costa Avenue around 2:50 a.m., according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.
At least one person was killed and a second person was in critical condition, said CHP Officer Mark Latulippe. He said one driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
Details about the crash were not immediately released.
Traffic on the freeway was backed up for miles during the morning commute as cHP officers worked to clear and investigate the crash.
For more than five hours, all lanes of northbound I-5 were closed with traffic being detoured off and back on at the La Costa Avenue ramps.
Shortly before 8:15 a.m., Caltrans tweeted that the HOV and fast lane had reopened while three other lanes remained closed to traffic.
