Three men were taken into custody early Sunday after leading police on a pursuit through City Heights that ended in a fiery crash in National City, authorities said.

At about 3:30 a.m., San Diego police received a call of a suspected burglary near Thorn and 41st streets in City Heights. When police approached a vehicle near the residence, the driver attempted to hit an officer with his vehicle and sped away, said Officer Sarah Foster.

San Diego police Lt. Christian Sharp told OnScene TV that officers followed the vehicle south through City Heights on Fairmount Avenue. The vehicle struck a car and then proceeded south on Interstate 805.

During the pursuit, the vehicle lost a tire and was driving on a rim, Sharp said. The driver eventually pulled to the side of the road on the westbound on-ramp of state Route 54.

The vehicle caught fire, Sharp said, and three men in the vehicle took off running near North Second Avenue and Sweetwater Road in National City.

All three were located and taken into custody. Sharp said investigators planned to return to the home where the burglary was reported to see if any items were taken.
