Eric Dier claims he has a ‘good chance’ of making Gareth Southgate’s 2024 European Championship squad despite 15 months since his last cap.

He joined Bayern Munich on loan from Tottenham in January having started one Premier League game all season.

But Dier has settled in well and was picked ahead of Kim Min-jae in the Champions league on Tuesday night, even convincing Harry Kane that he can make England’s 23-man roster after the 3-0 win over Lazio.

‘The national team is a really simple thing. You try to play as well as possible for your club and everything else is out of your control.

‘I have not spoken to Gareth but it is up to me to play well.’

Dier has not played for England since he featured as a substitute against Senegal in the last 16 of the Qatar World Cup.

He has already survived one major drought in his England career. Almost two years passed between appearances in November 2020 and September 2022, when he forced his way back into Southgate’s thinking.

The 30-year-old was an unused substitute in the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine in March last year.

His form with Bayern is an upgrade on being an outcast at Spurs.

Having now played eight times for Die Roten, he has triggered a permanent move to Bayern on a deal until 2025, effective as of this summer, as per the Sun.

Could he add to his 49 England caps? Harry Kane thinks it’s possible.

He told the Sun: ‘Here at Bayern, Eric has been amazing. It was not an easy situation for him to come in, in terms of where he was at with Spurs.

‘He has to keep doing what he is doing. Gareth Southgate knows what he is capable of and it will be pleasing for him to see another Englishman playing at the highest level. Hopefully, Eric can keep it up.

‘Eric has been a big part of the national team in recent years.’
