Tiger Woods' horrific rollover car crash is the latest of many scares

Tiger Woods’ tumultuous history with car accidents and controversies has resurfaced following a recent two-car rollover crash near his residence in Jupiter, Florida.

As of Friday night, Woods found himself in legal trouble once more, facing charges that include driving under the influence (DUI), property damage, and declining to submit a urine sample to law enforcement. Despite the dramatic incident, both Woods and the other driver emerged unscathed. Authorities reported that Woods exited his overturned Range Rover through the passenger-side door.

Although a Breathalyzer test showed no traces of alcohol in Woods’ system, officers noted signs of impairment, leading to his arrest for refusing the urine test.

This latest crash has reignited unsettling memories for his fans, reminiscent of previous incidents.

“Why does this guy always seem to be in bizarre car accidents?” one fan questioned on Friday afternoon, reflecting a widespread sentiment across social media platforms.

In another incident five years prior, Woods experienced a similar rollover in California, but this time he wasn’t charged with DUI. Instead, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that Woods was driving at approximately 80 mph, nearly double the legal speed limit at the time of the accident.

What’s more, eyewitnesses told TMZ that Woods appeared agitated and impatient while leaving a golf tournament parking lot in the moments before the crash.

Woods was never charged in 2021, but he wasn’t so lucky in 2017, when he was pulled over by Jupiter police about 15 miles from his home. Officers said they found him unconscious in his Mercedes-Benz, which was parked awkwardly on the roadside at around 3am.

Upon closer inspection, they noticed damage to his vehicle.

The good news was that Woods didn’t have any alcohol in his system, but later tests found the active ingredient for marijuana, two painkillers – Vicodin and Dilaudid – the sleep drug Ambien and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.

He later claimed he’d been self-medicating for pain caused by his fourth back surgery and insomnia. Woods did not specifically address the marijuana issue and he wasn’t found with any of the drug in his possession.

Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving and received a year of probation, a $250 fine and was ordered to undergo 50 hours of community service. He was also banned from drinking alcohol during the probation.

Perhaps one silver lining came in July of 2017, when Woods completed a private program to address his dependency on pain killers.

‘I will continue to tackle this going forward with my doctors, family and friends,’ he tweeted at the time. ‘I am so very thankful for all of the support I’ve received.’

Woods’ most notorious car crash took place in November of 2009, when he rammed his Cadillac Escalade into a fire hydrant, tree and several hedges near his home.

He was treated for minor injuries and received a ticket for careless driving, but while he thanked his then-wife Elin Nordegren for getting him out of the car, there were lingering doubts about the story. After all, it was only days earlier that the National Enquirer claimed he’d had an affair with Rachel Uchitel, a 9/11 widow and New York nightclub manager.

The alleged details of November 27, 2009 were ultimately included in the best-selling biography from Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian, titled: Tiger Woods.

As detailed in the book, Woods arranged a phone call with his wife and Uchitel, who denied having an affair with the golfer. But Nordegren was unconvinced and went digging through Woods’ phone as he was sleeping. There, she found the name ‘Jaimee Grubbs’ in his call log and left a message on her voicemail.

‘Who is this’, she said, ‘because you are f***ing my husband.’

The book goes on to claim that Nordegren scrolled through his phone a second time where she found a message Woods had sent to an unknown number reading: ‘You are the only one I’ve ever loved.’

Unsure of who the message was sent to, Nordegren wrote another, impersonating her husband: ‘I miss you. When are we seeing each other again?’

After getting a response, Nordegren called the number, which reportedly belonged to Uchitel.

‘I knew it,’ Nordegren said, according to the book. ‘I knew it!’

‘Oh, f***,’ Uchitel is said to have replied.

Woken by an enraged Nordegren, Woods reportedly fled the home – pursued by his club-wielding wife – and jumped into his Cadillac Escalade SUV. Pulling out of the driveway at 30mph, Woods crashed into a fire hydrant before smashing into a tree and winding up unconscious and bloody in the street.

Later it was revealed that Nordegren had shattered several windows with the club in pursuit of her unfaithful husband.

A long succession of other women – porn stars, strippers, prostitutes, hostesses, waitresses and more – soon came forward claiming they had slept with Woods.

In total, it was claimed that Woods had cheated on his wife, the mother of his two children, Sam and Charlie, with no fewer than 121 different women. A beauty pageant for Woods’ alleged mistresses was later held on the Howard Stern Show as the golfer graced the front page of the New York Post for 20 consecutive days, surpassing a record set by the September 11 attacks.

On December 2, 2009, one woman came forward with proof of a 31-month affair with Woods, claiming to have met him shortly after his Masters win in 2007, two months before his first child was born.

Woods released a statement hours after that story broke, acknowledging ‘transgressions’ and admitting that he ‘is far short of perfect’.

He then released a further statement on his website on December 11 announcing his indefinite break from golf to ‘focus my attention on being a better husband, father and person’ but he was eventually divorced by Elin in 2010, costing him a reported $100m.

After Christmas, he checked into Pine Grove Behavioural Health and Addiction Services in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It was claimed that he took part in the ‘Gratitude’ program, which is used to treat sex addiction.

It wasn’t until February 19, 2010, that Woods spoke publicly at a press conference in Florida, where his mother was sat in the front row.

‘I was unfaithful,’ he admitted. ‘I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable,’ Woods said. ‘For all that I have done, I am so sorry. I have a lot to atone for. I have let you down and I have let down my fans.’

He eventually returned to golf at the 2010 Masters, where he was berated by the chairman of Augusta National, Billy Payne, for his behavior.

‘He disappointed all of us,’ Payne said at a now infamous news conference. ‘And more importantly, our kids and our grandkids. Our hero did not live up to the expectations of the role model we saw for our children.’

Woods’ other scandals seem almost quaint by comparison, such as his abrupt dismissal of his caddie, Steve Williams, in July of 2011.

Williams later brought their bitter split up in his 2015 autobiography, saying he felt like Woods’ ‘slave.’

He also slammed Woods’ behavior on the course, claiming the American showed him a lack of respect despite their trophy-laden collaborations.

‘He was well known for his bad temper and, while that wasn’t pleasant to witness, you could live with it because it ended as quickly as it started,’ Williams wrote in his book.

‘But he had other bad habits that upset me. One thing that really pissed me off was how he would flippantly toss a club in the general direction of the bag, expecting me to go over and pick it up.

‘I felt uneasy about bending down to pick up his discarded club, it was like I was his slave.’

Woods has also faced criticism over his relationship with Donald Trump, who gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom back in 2019.

In particular, critics were upset that Woods continued to fraternize with Trump amid his various immigration crackdowns. Woods’ mother, Kultida Woods (née Punsawad), was an immigrant from Thailand.

‘Well, I’ve known Donald for a number of years,’ Woods said of Trump in 2019. ‘We’ve played golf together. We’ve had dinner together. I’ve known him pre-presidency and obviously during his presidency.

‘He’s the President of the United States. You have to respect the office.

‘No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office.’

And of course, Woods and Trump are now linked even closer with the golfer currently dating Vanessa Trump, the President’s former daughter-in-law and ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr.

For his part, the President was admittedly at a loss for words when addressing Woods’ crash with reporters on Friday.

‘I feel so badly,’ Trump told reporters after stepping off his limousine as he was traveling to Mar-a-Lago, just 22 miles from where Woods rolled over his car in Jupiter.

Trump was speaking before it was revealed that Woods had been arrested for DUI as a result of the crash, although the President did acknowledge some ‘difficulty’ facing the PGA star.

‘He’s got some difficulty,’ Trump continued. ‘There was an accident and that’s all I know. Very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, amazing man. But, some difficulty.’

And it’s not the first time.
