CHICAGO (WLS) — A tragic accident on Chicago’s South Side claimed two lives and left three others injured Friday night, according to authorities.

The collision occurred around 9:30 p.m. in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, specifically at the intersection of West 75th Street and South Vincennes Avenue, as reported by the Chicago police.

A 37-year-old woman driving a grey Buick sedan was heading west when she attempted to make a southbound turn but failed to yield at the intersection, officials stated.

As a result, her Buick collided with a black Dodge that was traveling eastbound. The impact also caused damage to an unoccupied, parked grey Mercedes sedan nearby.

Footage from the scene displayed significant wreckage with debris strewn across the area. Eyewitnesses noted that at least two individuals were thrown from the vehicles.

The two occupants of the Dodge were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were unfortunately pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified them as 20-year-old Matthew Cuadra and 18-year-old April M. Valencia, both of Lansing.

Police said the Dodge’s driver, a 26-year-old man, and two other passengers, a 15-year-old girl and a 25-year-old woman, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers issued the Buick’s driver a citation for failure to yield during a left turn.

CPD’s Major Accidents Unit is investigating.
