UC San Diego political scientist Barbara F. Walter, an expert on the American Civil War, will talk about whether the country is headed for another violent upheaval during a free public forum that will be held on campus on Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m. Her presentation also will stream live on Zoom. (Registration information)

Walter is the author of the new book “How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them”, which has become a New York Times bestseller.

She will examine “the dramatic rise in violent extremism around the globe – in Iraq, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Philippines, India, Syria – and reveals how many of the risk factors for civil war are emerging here in the United States,” UCSD says in a statement.

“The country has undergone a seismic cultural, economic and demographic change. Americans are increasingly distrustful of their government and each other and misinformation is spreading widely, largely because of social media.”

The talk will be moderated by Thad Kousser, chair of the political science department at UCSD.

The hour-long talk will be held in the Great Hall, which is part of the
School of Global Policy and Strategy complex. Parking is available at the Pangea lot at the intersection of Pangea Drive and North Torrey Pines Road. (Campus map)
