A U.S. congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the courage of the Ukrainian people in remarks during a visit to Poland on Sunday, a day after a surprise trip to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymr Zelenskyy.

The American legislators assessed Ukraine’s needs for the next phase of the war, with Pelosi vowing that Washington would stand with the country until it defeats Russia.

Pelosi and a half-dozen U.S. lawmakers met for three hours late Saturday with Zelenskyy and his top aides to get a first-hand assessment of the war effort to date. Speaking to reporters Sunday in Poland, the delegation members were unanimous in praising Ukraine’s defenses so far, in painting the battle of one as good against evil and in assuring continued long-term U.S. military, humanitarian and economic support.

Efforts to help Ukrainians adjust to a new normal

In a tiny village called Medika sits the busiest border crossing between Poland and Ukraine. It is where and endless stream of people still walk across, then through a makeshift support center before loading on buses to their next stop.

Cardinal Dolan in Poland
Cardinal Timothy Dolan arrived in Poland Friday to meet with Ukrainians escaping the military invasion of their homeland.

Dolan arrived at the Krakow Airport before heading to a church in a town called Bibice about 45 minutes outside of the city. He was welcomed with bread and salt and then led into the church for a brief prayer.

Afterward, he met with refugees cared for by the parish before heading to the Krakow train station, where the Order of Malta is set up to provide care and support to refugees in the city.

Jewish Community Center of Krakow
Krakow is the second-largest city in Poland, which has seen its population jump by more than 20% due to the influx of Ukrainian refugees. It is about two to three hours from the Ukraine border and has a rich and tragic history as the gateway to Auschwitz during the Nazi occupation.

Jonathan Ornstein is a native New Yorker and the executive director of the Jewish Community Center of Krakow, where they are funding hotel rooms for hundreds of refugees every day.

People line up down the block every day looking for everything from toothbrushes to housing, and the JCC is serving everyone, regardless of religion.

T-Shirt Factory Hiring Refugees
The majority of refugees went to Poland, where they have tried to find housing — and work.

A T-shirt factory that manufactures global brands and is owned by a man originally from New Jersey, who coincidentally graduated from Sayreville High School with Jon Bon Jovi, has given work to dozens of refugees.
