Vile virgins fantasy of Dark Menace paedo barrister who took own life

A prominent criminal lawyer and charity founder tragically ended his life following allegations of pedophilia, having previously confided in friends about his troubling ambition to engage with ‘100 virgins’.

Mark Dennis SC, aged 60, was taken into custody on January 20 after arriving at Sydney Airport from Cambodia, intercepted by the Australian Border Force.

Authorities examined his electronic devices, allegedly uncovering exploitative material and inappropriate conversations involving minors. Among these was a particularly alarming exchange where he expressed intentions to assault a 16-year-old.

Using the alias ‘Dark Menace’ for his online presence and professional correspondence, Dennis was released on bail the day after his arrest and was scheduled to appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on February 12.

Tragically, on Monday evening, police discovered his body at his residence in Leichhardt, located in Sydney’s inner west, where he had died by suicide.

He had yet to enter a plea regarding the charges, which are anticipated to be dismissed at the forthcoming court session.

Now the Daily Mail can reveal that, as far back as a decade ago, Dennis told friends that he had a goal of having sex with 100 virgins before he died.

Dennis presented a very different side of himself to legal associates: he was known as a well-regarded lawyer who ran a yearly professional development conference and a charity for young people in Cambodia.

In 2022, Dennis was given a platform in the NSW Bar Association legal journal to speak about starting his foundation for young people, Reasonable Causes, after a visit to Cambodia in 2006. 

He said he managed to juggle his charity work with his responsibilities as a barrister ‘with difficulty’, and added: ‘I burn the candle at both ends, but it’s a lot of fun.’

Dennis told the journal his ‘philanthropy’ was ‘like a form of adrenaline’ that gave him an immense feeling of satisfaction.

‘You can’t change the world, or even a country – but you can take a handful of individual lives and change those lives,’ he said. 

‘And the feeling when you do, it’s pretty incredible.’

He travelled to Cambodia twice a year from 2006, telling the journal: ‘I hadn’t really been a philanthropist up until then, but I was at the point in my life where it was time to start.’

Troublingly, he would have had unfettered access to young children in orphanages and care facilities during his charity work in South East Asia.

In the journal interview, he spoke of a ‘rock star’ five-year-old boy who was living at an out-of-home care facility in the nation’s capital Phnom Penh when Dennis was on one of his first trips to Cambodia in 2007. 

Dennis told the journal he kept in contact with the boy and eventually offered him a scholarship to study at university through his charity.

His goal for 2023 was to set up a vocational program for young women.  

When his matter appeared before Bail Court in January, prosecutor Jon Kisch said Dennis had chats with at least two people that allegedly revealed a sexual interest in children.

Mr Kisch also said the conversations showed a ‘willingness to subvert’ consent laws.

‘There’s a description of potentially a desire to rape a 16-year-old … I appreciate that’s as far as it goes, but certainly very disturbing chats,’ he told the court.

According to the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission, Reasonable Causes operated out of Cambodia, worked to improve the lives of locals from age six to 24, and partnered with a range of local children’s charities.

Reasonable Causes made about $AUD242,000 per year, comprising about $108,000 in donations alone.

The Cambodia Children’s Fund was one of the partner organisations that took funding from Reasonable Causes.

CEO Scott Neeson told the Daily Mail financial assistance from the organisation has now been rejected.

He said Dennis once visited their site in Phnom Penh, but never left the side of staff on site. 

‘He was very firm and business-like,’ Mr Neeson recalled.

The Daily Mail previously revealed Dennis was known to boast to colleagues about his philanthropic work with orphanages in Cambodia, saying he was helping install bathrooms and various facilities. 

Dennis had been practising out of the prestigious Forbes Chambers, Sydney’s top criminal law chambers, until his arrest.

His lawyer Michael Burke told Sydney’s Bail Court in January that his client would stop practising law immediately.

Dennis’s name and profile were then scrubbed from the Forbes Chambers website.

The now-deleted profile included information about Dennis’s charity work in Cambodia.

‘Mark was the Chairman of the Australia Cambodia Foundation from 2018 to 2020,’ it originally read.

‘This charity assists disadvantaged Cambodian children with a particular emphasis on alleviating educational disadvantage. 

‘​From 2003 to 2012 Mark was a member of the Management Committee of the Immigration and Rights Advice Centre, a community legal centre that assists disadvantaged immigrants including refugees.’

Australian Border Force officials intercepted Dennis at the airport and searched his luggage following ‘intelligence led screening’.

‘The matter was reported to the AFP for further investigation,’ the Australian Federal Police said in a statement on Wednesday.

‘AFP members attended and on further examination of the device, identified alleged child abuse material and sexualised conversations with and about minors.’
