A homicide inquiry is underway following the fatal shooting of a man in his 40s on a suburban street within a city.

Authorities responded to a call concerning the incident in the Coxford district of Southampton around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, where they discovered the victim suffering from severe wounds.

A 31-year-old man has been detained on murder charges and is currently in police custody.

A representative from Hampshire Constabulary stated, “Tragically, despite medical intervention, the victim was declared dead at the scene. Efforts are ongoing today to notify his next of kin.”

The spokesperson continued, “At the location, a man from Southampton, aged 31, was apprehended and remains in custody.”

“He faces charges of murder and possessing a firearm with the intent to threaten life,” the spokesman added.

The spokesman said that detectives would be carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Clair Trueman said on Thursday: ‘Any time you hear of an incident involving a gun, it will undoubtedly be of concern for local residents.

‘Officers were quickly in attendance last night, and we have a man in custody today as we continue our investigation.

‘We are working hard today to better understand what has occurred at the address, and to locate the family of the man who has died so that we can support them at what we know will be a difficult time.’

Deputy district commander for Southampton, Chief Inspector Chris Douglas added: ‘We have officers from our local policing team in the Coxford area, carrying out additional patrols and supporting the investigation today and this will continue in the coming days.

‘Officers were quickly on the scene last night, and arrested a man in connection with this death.

‘If you do have any concerns, then please do speak to us when you see us, and if you do have any information which could assist the investigation team, then I would urge you to share it as soon as possible.’

One local resident said there was a ‘strong’ police presence last night, saying: ‘No idea what’s happened. We have been living here for five years, nothing happens like this.’

Another resident said: ‘Scary isn’t it. I didn’t hear or see anything.

‘It’s only because I saw on Facebook and looked out my window and saw it all taped off.’

A 53-year-old woman added: ‘I just looked outside the window and there where police everywhere. There was quite a few.

‘Police obviously stopping people going up that road and then we saw ambulances coming out.’

Neighbours today told of the moment that SWAT teams descended on their road.

A next door neighbour, who wanted to remain anonymous, claimed that a Polish man of about 30 lived at the address.

He said: ‘I didn’t know him but he was a nice guy. He would stop and ask about my family.

‘He lived alone I think.

Another next door neighbour, also anonymous, confirmed the man living at the address was a Polish man of around 30 years old.

The neighbour was working at the time of the shooting and did not know anything else about him.

A neighbour who lived across the street said that the Polish man drove a ‘very nice car’ and pointed out a black 2019 Mercedes Benz C Class.

This car has since been towed away from the scene.

She said: ‘All I know is that my brother came up the road at nine o’clock. He was fully sprinting to tell us there was police.

‘There were four police cars outside and they got out and were in SWAT gear.

‘They got a battering ram for the door and hit the glass with it.

‘Then four ambulances came and there were two around the corner and they carried the body out at about 9:30pm.

‘I think the man that lived there drove a very nice car, that black BMW.’

Another neighbour said he did not know anything about the shooting but that his car had been firebombed recently and he believes it was a case of ‘mistaken identity’.

He drives a 2012 black Audi A3 which was parked about 20 metres away from the address of the shooting.

He said: ‘I don’t really know anything, but it’s not the first time something like this has happened. My own car got firebombed recently which I think was a case of mistaken identity.’

Steph Adlam, who also lives on the street, said: ‘It’s not the first time it’s happened around here.

‘I’m getting sick of it. I’ve asked for a management transfer.

‘I’ve got kids and I don’t want them around it.’

Kamiah Glasspool, a 53-year-old who lives on Olive Road which is next to Conifer Road, said: ‘I went to bed around nine o’clock and my son came in and opened the curtains to say we had police outside.

‘We saw or boy or a man getting arrested and I said that the police have got to do whatever they’ve got to do.

‘I’ve lived here since July and nothing really happens around here. I’ve never seen anything like it here.

‘Trust my son to find it though, he’s like the bloody neighbourhood watch.’
