Huge: US May Be Seeing First Negative Net Migration in 50 Years

What a difference a president can make! Just a year ago, the seemingly confused Joe Biden was lamenting his inability to address the open border issues without some vague, unspecified action from Congress. Biden also seemed to struggle even to navigate out of the Oval Office’s private bathroom without assistance.

Then along came Donald Trump, changing the situation instantly. Now, in 2025, the United States could very well be on the path to experiencing its first year of negative net migration in over half a century. Harry Enten from CNN provided the data.

Mr. Enten says:

Want to know about net migration into the United States? It’s on the decline, by at least 60 percent. We might be encountering negative net migration in 2025, marking the first time this has happened in the country in at least 50 years, decreasing from 2.8 million in 2024. Donald Trump has consistently run on high tariffs and stringent immigration policies, and in both areas, we’re witnessing all-time high tariff levels this century, reaching back well into the early 1900s. As for immigration, net migration numbers have plummeted since the Biden administration. This year, we may see negative net migration for the first time in at least half a century.

As someone famously said, this is a significant development. The southern border is now effectively sealed. ICE is apprehending the most dangerous individuals, processing them through various facilities, and deporting them. This was a key promise of President Trump during the 2024 election, and he is now following through.
