A Texas mother and father have been charged with murder a year after police discovered their 4-month-old daughter dead inside a hotel drawer.

Authorities claim that the parents, Destiny Campos, 21, and Jeremy Fancher, 38, placed their baby, Brookelynn Fancher, into a drawer to sleep in May 2024. Despite her loud cries, they reportedly used a towel to keep the drawer securely shut, as reported by FOX 8.

The couple had been residing at a Days Inn & Suites on Rancho Mission Drive, located in Harris County, for almost a year when this event occurred, based on information from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Click2Houston, referencing court documents, Campos mentioned to investigators that her husband, Fancher, secured the drawer with a towel to prevent the baby from kicking it open.

The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Brookelynn died from suffocation.

Following the infant’s death, Fancher told investigators he had gone to the store and returned to find the drawer closed. Campos allegedly said she was asleep and assumed Fancher had the baby.

“Campos stated that defendant Fancher complained [Brookelynn’s] screams were piercing his ears,” the complaint stated. “Defendant Fancher would feed the complainant a bottle to get her to be quiet. Regarding the complainant’s sleeping arrangements, defendant Campos stated defendant Fancher would place the complainant inside the drawer and would sometimes close it while also stuffing a towel around the edges to prevent the complainant from kicking the drawer open.”

A motel housekeeper reportedly took photos of Brookelynn in the drawer and then notified management.

“The [housekeeper] recalled going into the room on one occasion from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, opening the drawer because it was completely shut and noticing the complainant inside crying, while [the 18-month-old] sat on the floor eating cookie crumbs,” cops allege. “The [housekeeper] said she confronted defendant Campos about leaving the complainant inside of the drawer and defendant Campos told her it was okay, while laughing,” the affidavit read.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced Saturday that authorities had taken the infant’s parents into custody and charged them with murder.

“I’m glad our team has remained relentless and sought justice for this precious infant,” Gonzalez wrote in a statement. “Thanks to them, we are closer to securing justice for baby Brookelynn.”

A judge set Fancher’s bond at $850,000, while Campos’ bond has been set at $300,000.

Meanwhile, a third person, identified as Fancher’s girlfriend, Marilyn Jennifer Mork, was also arrested and charged with hindering apprehension.
