Amanda Seyfried stars in new biopic 'The Testament of Ann Lee' with a musical reimagining of history

LOS ANGELES — A new film featuring Amanda Seyfried is gearing up for its theatrical release, promising a fresh take by presenting an unconventional musical narrative.

The movie explores the life of Ann Lee, a prominent 18th-century Shaker figure, who was revered by her followers as Mother Ann.

During the premiere, On The Red Carpet had the chance to speak with the cast, who shared insights about the film’s unique storytelling approach.

Amanda Seyfried, who portrays Ann Lee, discussed with On The Red Carpet what captivated her about the project.

“It was the first time I encountered a script that left me completely puzzled about how it would translate on screen,” she admitted.

“The opportunity to express oneself beyond just words, through dance, movement, and vocal performance, enhances the actor’s experience. It allowed me to discover more of myself while embodying Ann Lee,” Seyfried added.

The film is directed by Mona Fastvold who teamed up with collaborator Brady Corbet, with whom she earned an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay for “The Brutalist.”

Lewis Pullman, who plays Ann Lee’s brother William, described the film as both immersive and transportive.

“It’s as much of an entertaining movie as it is sort of like a weird bath of time travel,” he said.

“It is very historically accurate, but the way that it was shot was, as Mona says, like ‘crawling into a painting.’”

The film also stars Thomasin McKenzie, Tim Blake Nelson, Stacy Martin and Christopher Abbott.

“The Testament of Ann Lee” premieres Dec. 25 in theaters.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of 20th Century Studios and this ABC station.
