The 11 victims are being treated at a nearby hospital, medical authorities have announced.

“Our Emergency Department is presently seeing a surge in patient numbers beyond the normal capacity,” shared Munson Medical Centre on social media.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea revealed at a news conference that cops believe the suspect acted alone.

“There is no information indicating there were additional suspects,” he said.

“It appears that these were all random acts.”

Shea told reporters the suspect, a Michigan resident, wielded a “folding knife style weapon”.

The sheriff said three of the victims are undergoing surgery.

Six of the victims are male and five are female, he further revealed.

There was “citizen involvement” in getting the suspect into custody, Shea added.

The suspect is not believed to have been injured.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer posted on X: “I’m in touch with law enforcement about the horrible news out of Traverse City.

“Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.

“I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the bureau’s personnel are responding to provide any necessary support to local authorities.

Traverse City is located around 140 miles north of Grand Rapids and 255 miles northwest of Detroit.

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is married to a Traverse City native, expressed on X: “Chasten and I, along with the entire Traverse City community, are deeply unsettled by the tragic and senseless act of violence at Walmart earlier today.”

“We’re thinking of everyone affected and hoping and praying for speedy recovery for all those who were injured.”

Walmart corporate spokesperson Joe Pennington told CNN: “Violence like this is unacceptable.

“Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders.

“We’ll continue working closely with law enforcement during their investigation.”
