At least 41 individuals have lost their lives in central and southeastern Mexico, following severe rainfalls that led to floods and landslides, according to authorities on Saturday.

The number of fatalities increased as thousands of soldiers combed through the devastation left by retreating waters, working to clear roads filled with debris like trees and vehicles to find those who are missing.

In Poza Rica, an oil city situated 170 miles northeast of Mexico City, locals recounted to The Associated Press the moments when they heard a surge of water and vehicles crashing before witnessing streets submerged under over 12 feet of water on Friday.

Not everyone was able to evacuate in time.

There were also 15 fatalities reported in Veracruz, where army and navy personnel conducted rescue missions for residents in numerous communities that became isolated due to landslides and overflowing rivers blocking travel routes.

Officials reported that they are searching for 27 missing individuals across the area, with 16,000 homes sustaining damage in the 55 municipalities within the Gulf coast state.

Earlier, in the central state of Querétaro, a child died after being caught in a landslide.
