LOS ANGELES (AP) — Loni Anderson, known for portraying a struggling radio station’s confident receptionist on the popular TV comedy “WKRP in Cincinnati,” passed away on Sunday, just days before reaching her 80th birthday.

Anderson died at a Los Angeles hospital following a “prolonged” illness, said her longtime publicist, Cheryl J. Kagan.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,” Anderson’s family said in a statement.

The show, “WKRP in Cincinnati,” aired from 1978-1982 and was centered around an underperforming Ohio radio station aiming to revive its image with rock music. The ensemble cast included Gary Sandy, Tim Reid, Howard Hesseman, Frank Bonner, and Jan Smithers, with Anderson playing the sexy and intelligent Jennifer Marlowe.

In her role as the station’s receptionist, the blonde and stylish Jennifer utilized her allure to ward off unnecessary business calls for her superior, Mr. Carlson. Her proficiency often ensured the station’s functionality amid the incompetence of others.

The role earned Anderson two Emmy Award nominations and three Golden Globe nominations.

Anderson appeared on the silver screen with Burt Reynolds in the 1983 comedy “Stroker Ace.” The pair later married, becoming tabloid regulars, prior to their divorce in 1994.

In 1995, Anderson authored an autobiography titled “My Life in High Heels,” describing it as a story of personal growth and survival. The book covers her childhood, parental loss, career, divorces, and children, along with the challenges faced during her marriage to Burt.

“I believe if you’re going to write about yourself, it should be candid and complete,” Anderson told The Associated Press. “It might even include the less flattering aspects, because honesty is key.”

Anderson is survived by her husband Bob Flick, daughter Deidra and son-in law Charlie Hoffman, son Quinton Anderson Reynolds, grandchildren McKenzie and Megan Hoffman, stepson Adam Flick and wife Helene, step-grandchildren Felix and Maximilian.
