WASHINGTON — Big Lots will open 73 more stores this week as it continues its retail comeback.

Variety Wholesaler, which gained control of over 200 Big Lots stores in a deal last December, has reopened several dozen stores over the past month. Beginning on Thursday, May 15, an additional 73 stores will welcome back customers across the U.S.

But that’s just the beginning.

Further store openings are anticipated to occur through early June and continue in the following months, culminating in a “grand celebration” in the fall, as previously mentioned in a company press release.

“We’re excited to revitalize the Big Lots! brand by presenting more deals than ever, numerous renowned brands, and a new apparel department for the whole family,” stated Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, in a press release. “We are rapidly opening stores to serve the community, knowing the initial setup won’t be flawless. However, we plan to introduce more new products each week as we prepare for the grand opening celebration in the fall.”

Newly reopened stores are set to pop up in North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, West Virginia, and more in the coming months.

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and closed more than 400 stores last year. The retailer, which mostly sells furniture, home decor and some other items, previously said the closures were precipitated by economic pressures, including high inflation and reduced consumer spending on home and seasonal products — critical revenue streams for the retailer.
