Officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command chased affer a dark-coloured Audi A1 along Old South Head Road in Rose Bay at about 4am.
Several shots were fired by an officer as the car was driven towards police on Sir Thomas Mitchell Road, police said.
Three shots hit the windscreen and one hit the car’s bonnet, police revealed.
The pursuit was abandoned due to speed and the fugitive was allegedly found hiding in a backyard shed in North Bondi.
Lau Toro, a resident near the dumped stolen Audi, alerted police to his whereabouts more than five hours after the initial incident.
“He was sleeping and I was like ‘who is this guy?’ I tried to call the police and then I saw the (police) car,” Toro told 9News.
It’s alleged the car was stolen from Double Bay at around 3.20am yesterday.
The man, 24, was arrested and charged with four offences, including stealing a car, not stopping for police, breaking and entering, and resisting assault.
Two outstanding arrest warrants were also executed.
The man was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court today.
An internal review will be conducted in relation to the shots fired by an officer.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The Audi hatchback, which was allegedly stolen from Double Bay overnight, is now being examined by forensic officers.
