Metropolitan Ministries is set to kick off its annual holiday outreach in Tampa Bay, with the opening of its holiday tents this Monday. This initiative aims to extend a lifeline to families in need throughout the region, offering vital support during the festive season.

The organization has highlighted a significant surge in the number of families reaching out for food assistance, with figures having doubled. As a result, there is an urgent call for more volunteers to join the cause.

According to officials from the nonprofit, this increased demand is driven by a confluence of factors. Rising housing costs, the enduring financial fallout from the pandemic, the impact of recent hurricanes, and the ongoing government shutdown have all contributed to the challenges faced by these families.

Christine Long, the executive vice president and chief programs officer of Metropolitan Ministries, explained the comprehensive support offered during this time. “Families receive a whole turkey and supplies for a hearty meal, and as Christmas approaches, toys for their children are also provided,” she said.

Long emphasized that the launch of the holiday tent season represents more than just material assistance. “It’s an opportunity for families who are struggling to have their basic needs met and to infuse their holiday with hope and love,” she remarked, underscoring the broader impact of the initiative.

“It’s an opportunity for families who maybe are struggling to really get some of those basic needs met and make their holiday full of hope and love,” Long said.

Holiday tents will open for donations and assistance Monday across Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties.

Along with donors and collaborating partners, Metropolitan Ministries says the effort will rely on 15,000 volunteers, one million pounds of food, 60,000 toys and gift cards, and broad community support to meet the growing need.

Long said registration slots are filling up fast.

“Registering ahead of time is critical. As a matter of fact, our registration is filling up extremely fast. I heard that we only have a couple more days left of slots for Thanksgiving,” she said.

Long adds families can register both in person or through the organization’s website which can be found here.
