Bodycam footage shows police shooting Cale Gilbert in Jacksonville after he fired at a couple and rammed their car.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Bodycam footage released Friday shows the moments leading up to a deadly police shooting last month in Jacksonville.

On August 25, officers fatally shot 37-year-old Cale Gilbert. A Georgia couple, who was fishing at a boat ramp in Atlantic Beach near Dutton Island Preserve, reported that Gilbert fired at them. While attempting to flee, the couple called 911 as the suspect rammed their vehicle with his truck.

During the 911 call, the victim can be heard saying, “Oh my God, I’m so scared. I’m so scared.”

The dispatcher asks, “Is he in front of you or behind you still?”

The victim recounted, “He sped past us, then attempted to collide with us head-on. We swerved, but he struck us, pushing our vehicle into the side of his truck.”

Subsequent surveillance footage shows the suspect colliding with a Jeep at an intersection on Mayport Road. Losing control, he crashed into some bushes nearby. Patrol units arrived shortly thereafter.

For around 90 minutes, the suspect ignored commands to exit the truck. A cautionary note—the following video clip contains audio of the deadly shooting. Officers fired when they claimed Gilbert reached for a rifle case.

Later, JSO’s dive team retrieved the suspect’s rifle from the water at the initial crime scene near the dock. Investigators also discovered 47 shell casings.

The State Attorney’s Office will determine if the officers’ shooting was justified.
