In a chilling incident on Sunday, two teenage girls narrowly escaped an attempted abduction in Los Angeles, authorities reported. The Los Angeles Police Department detailed the alarming encounter, which thankfully ended with the girls’ safe return.
The teens, aged 13 and 16, initially encountered their would-be kidnapper at North Hills Community Park. Detective Efren Gutierrez recounted that the suspect first approached the girls in his vehicle, offering them a ride. The girls wisely declined and continued on their way, seemingly avoiding danger.
However, as they walked several blocks further, the man approached them once more, reiterating his offer. The girls refused again, determined to stay safe. But the situation took a harrowing turn when the suspect persisted, presenting the offer a third time. Under circumstances yet to be fully understood, the teens accepted and entered the vehicle.
According to Detective Gutierrez, the suspect did not follow the route the girls had requested. Instead, he drove towards an isolated residential area near Sunburst and Lemona Avenue, an area described as quiet and lacking significant foot or vehicle traffic. The incident raises concerns about safety and awareness, yet it also highlights the girls’ eventual escape, a relief amid the fear.
The detective said the girls entered the vehicle, which headed east.
“However, instead of going to the location where the girls instructed him to, the suspect drove to the area of Sunburst and Lemona Avenue … it’s a residential neighborhood, but it’s secluded enough … not enough people or vehicle traffic around,” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez said the suspect locked the car doors and offered the girls money, alcohol and drugs. He then unzipped his shorts where he asked for sexual favors in exchange for money, Gutierrez said.
“The girls were frightened,” he said. “They were able to jump out of the car. The first girl jumped out while the car was stationary, and the second girl jumped out of the car while it was in motion.”
Neither girl was injured, and both screamed for help as the suspect sped away.
The investigation remains ongoing. A detailed description of the suspect was not immediately available. He was described only as a man in his early 20s.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
