Authorities reported that a man in a black Jeep fired at the agents before speeding away from the location.
In addition to the gunfire, “an unknown number of agitators” reportedly hurled a can of paint and bricks at the Border Patrol vehicles, DHS noted.
The Chicago Police Department was summoned to provide support and managed to secure the area, according to DHS.
Efforts to locate the shooter are ongoing, as the suspect remains unidentified and at large.
DHS added, “This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of violence and obstruction. Over the past two months, we’ve seen an increase in assaults and obstruction targeting federal law enforcement during operations. These confrontations highlight the dangers our agents face daily and the escalating aggression toward law enforcement. The violence must end.”
ABC7 reached out to CPD for comment.
